Frequently asked questions for surf lessons

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes .

Do I need a reservation?

I highly making reservations either by walkup, call (808)-944.1966 or online.

Do you pickup from hotels?

Sorry we do not pickup but we are walking distance from Waikiki and Ala Moana hotels.

What time is check in?

Please check in 15 minutes prior to lesson to fill out liability forms.

What should I bring to the lessons?

Bring water for after the lesson and some money if you want to eat something near by, and a towel to dry off.

How should I prepare for the lesson?

You may wear surf shorts or bikini bottom, longsleve surf jersey if  you don't have we do provide.  Don't put any sun block on the front of your legs and torso area because your surfboard will be slippery.  But do put sunblock on the back of your legs and neck.  Make sure to stretch your limbs and get ready for a fun time surfing  and yup a free workout:)

What is considered an open-group surf lesson?

An Open-Group surf lessons can be either you grabbing a group of friends and family or you joining other people. This type of lesson ranges from two people to large groups. The ratio of surf instructors to students are determined by the instructor which he/she will decide by the wave conditions, weather conditions, and the amount of people. Most group lesson ratios are one instructor to four students. Group lessons are a great way to meet people from all over the world and create new friendships and also learn about different cultures throughout many countries.  Students must be 13 years of age or older.

What is considered a private-Group surf lesson?

Private Group lessons are usually smaller groups. This allows more attention from the instructor. This lesson is designed for family and friends who want to do a surf lesson together without other people joining in. This could be a parent(s) and children, siblings, or 2 to 4 friends who want to make sure they are the only ones laughing at each other :).  Students must be 13 years of age or older.

You will have the chance to catch more waves and learn about the surf etiquette on how to catch your own waves, which waves to choose, how to find the right place to catch a wave, and much more.

What is considered a private surf lesson?

Private surf lessons are for a person who wants individualized attention and isn’t interested in sharing his/her waves with others:). There are many reasons why someone would request a private lesson: (A) He/she is not comfortable in the water, (B) He/she took a lesson before and wants to go for bigger waves, (C) He/she wants the focus of the instructor and does not want to wait for other people to catch a wave before his/her next wave, and (D) He/she is a child below 13 years old and is unable to paddle back after each wave and therefore needs a personal instructor for safety reasons.

Is the surf lesson tiring?

Yes surfing is tiring but it's a fun workout.

Is there female surf instructors available?

Currently we have only one female instructor-Jillian so if you desire a female instructor then please request as soon as possible.  Surf lessons is not her full time job.  

Who are your male surf instructors?

James, Dane, Ron, Cody, Steve and Jake.

Are the surf instructors certified?

Surf instructors are CPR and Lifeguard certified through American Redcross.

What are the times available for surf lessons?

We start our first surf lesson at 9:00AM then 11:00AM, 1:00PM and 3:00PM.  These times are not guaranteed due to weather and wave conditions.  In most cases the morning lessons are the best conditions.  We could do an earlier lesson but please request at least a week prior.

How deep in the water and is there sand on the bottom?

The water depth can vary with the low and high tide (3ft to 8ft).  The bottom is only coral/rocks but the surf area is very safe.

How big are the waves?

The waves vary from 1 feet to 5+feet in height.

Are you hiring surf instructors?

If you are certified to teach in Waikiki, Please fill free to fill out an application which you may walkup and ask a manager on duty.
